STATEMENT OF FAITH FOR CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH

We, as a family of believers at Calvary Baptist Church, located at 1508 West Center Avenue in Searcy, Arkansas, purpose in our hearts to glorify God, share Jesus Christ, equip the disciples, and love and serve others. We are a family of believers who have the following fundamental beliefs:

 1. God - We believe that there is one God who exists in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

 2. Father – We believe that God is the Eternal Father, creator of the universe and the author and finisher of our salvation. God, as Father reigns with providential care over His universe, and all that He has created.

 3. Jesus – We believe that Jesus is the Son of God, was born of a virgin, was wholly God and wholly man, lived a sinless life, shed His blood and died in our place as a sacrifice for the sins of mankind, was buried, arose bodily from the grave, and ascended into Heaven. He is the one and only Savior of humanity who will literally return to earth. We believe that Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.  We believe that Jesus honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and in His death on the cross, He made provision for the redemption of men from sin.

 4. Holy Spirit – We believe that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, and is active in convincing unbelievers of their need for salvation. We believe that the Holy Spirit is the Comforter and Guide who lives in every believer. We believe that the Holy Spirit exalts Jesus Christ, and convicts of sin, righteousness, and of judgment. We believe that the Holy Spirit enlightens and empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service.

 5. Bible – We believe that the Holy Bible is the inspired Word of God without any error, the sole authority for life and faith. We believe that the Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and it is God's revelation of Himself to man.  It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction.

 6. Man – We believe that man is a special creation of God, made in His image, and is the crowning work of His creation. We believe that man, through the sin of the first man Adam, and by his own choice, plunged the entire human race into sin,  so that all men are sinners and need salvation.  We believe that because God created man in His own image, that mankind possesses dignity and is worthy of respect and Christian love.

 7. Salvation – We believe that salvation is a free gift of God’s grace, received through repentance of sin and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ alone.

 8. Assurance – We believe that every person who has truly received salvation is eternally secure in the Lord Jesus Christ.

 9. Eternity – We believe that the souls of those persons who die in their sins without accepting Jesus Christ as their Saviour will live eternally in Hell and those persons who accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour will have their sins  forgiven and live eternally in heaven.

10. Baptism and The Lord’s Supper – We believe that water baptism is an act of obedience, symbolizing the believer's faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Saviour.  We believe that baptism symbolizes the believer's death to sin, the burial of the old life before salvation, and the resurrection to walk in 'newness of life' in Christ Jesus. We believe that baptism is the command of Christ and is by immersion after salvation. We believe that the Lord’s Supper is a symbolic act of obedience for believers to proclaim Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death and future return. We believe that the unleavened bread used in the Lord's Supper represents Jesus' broken body on the cross. We believe that the 'fruit of the vine' represents Jesus' shed blood on the cross.

11. Church – We believe that the New Testament church is a local, visible body of scripturally baptized believers who are covenanted together in the faith and fellowship of the gospel, to carry out the Great Commission found in Matthew 28:19-20.  We believe the church is autonomous, and is primarily represented through a local body of baptized believers with the Lord Jesus Christ as the Head. The Holy Bible speaks of the church as the "body of Christ," which includes the redeemed of all the ages.

12. The Lord's Day--We believe the first day of the week is the Lord's Day. It commemorates the resurrection of Christ from the dead and should be employed in exercises of worship and spiritual devotion.

13. Last Things--We believe that, God, in His own time, and in His own way, will bring the world to it's appropriated end.  We believe that Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly. We believe the dead will be raised; and Christ will judge all men in righteousness.  We believe the saved will receive their reward and will dwell forever in heaven with the Lord.  We believe the unrighteous will be condemned forever to in eternity in hell.

14. Evengelism and Missions--We believe it is the duty and privilege of every saved child of God and every church of the Lord to strive to make disciples of all nations, and to constantly seek to win the lost(those without salvation) to Jesus by our efforts.

15. Stewardship--We believe that God is the source of all blessings, temporal and spiritual. We believe that all that we have, we owe to Him.  We believe that, as saved children of God, that we should serve Him with our time, our talents, and our tithes.

16. The Christian and the Social Order--We believe that every Christian is under obligation to seek to make the will of Christ supreme in his own life and in human society. Every Christian should oppose in the spirit of Christ, every form of greed, selfishness, and vice.

17. Religious Liberty--We believe that church and state should be separate.  We believe the state owes to every church, protection and full freedom in the pursuit of its spiritual ends. A free church in a free state is the Christian ideal.

18. Family--God has ordained the family as the foundational institution of human society.  We believe that marriage is the unity of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime.  God created and sanctioned marriage to bring together men and women, by joining them in "one-flesh" unions according to Genesis 2:18-25.  Marriage between one man and one woman for life uniquely reflects Christ's relationship with His church according to Ephesians 5:21-33.  We believe that marriage between one man and one woman provides the best chance that children will grow up in the same home with both their mother and father.   We believe that the husband and wife are of equal worth before God, since both are created in God's image. The marriage relationship models the way God relates to His people.

19. Statement on Marriage and Sexuality--We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to only occur between a man and a woman who are married to each other. We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of marriage between a man and a woman.

We believe that any form of sexual immorality, such as adultery, fornication, homosexuality, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, pornography or any attempt to change one's sexual gender, or disagreement with ones' sexual gender, is sinful and offensive to God, our Heavenly Father, and Creator.

We believe that, in order to preserve the function and integrity of the church as the local Body of Christ, and to provide a Biblical role model to the church members and the community, it is imperative that all persons employed by the church in any capacity, or who serve as volunteers, should abide by and agree to this Statement on Marriage and Sexuality and conduct themselves accordingly.

In addition, all services, ceremonies, and functions of whatever nature conducted by Calvary Baptist Church, whether in our worship sanctuary, other church facilities, or any other place,  will be in compliance with the standards stated above.  As this policy relates to weddings and marriage ceremonies, only those services uniting one man and one woman, the only model for marriage ordained by God in the Holy Bible(Scriptures), will be conducted in our church facilities or worship sanctuary.

We believe that wedding ceremonies on church property are spiritual observances of worship of God who created the divine institution of marriage.  As worship services, weddings on church property shall be officiated by one or more ordained ministers of the gospel, who are of like faith and order. Calvary Baptist Church may decline to make its facilities or ministers available for any wedding, if it is determined that one or both of the parties are not biblically and/or legally qualified to marry. Such determinations may be made by the pastor of this church or deacons, subject to the direction of  the church.

NO MINISTER (OR EMPLOYEE) OF CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH SHALL OFFICIATE AT ANY MARRIAGE CEREMONY UNLESS SUCH MARRIAGE IS CONSISTENT WITH THIS STATEMENT OF FAITH.

20. Sanctity of Life-- We believe that all human life is sacred and created by God in His image. Human life is of inestimable worth in all its dimensions, including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death. We are therefore called to defend, protect, and value all human life(Psalm 139).

We believe that life begins at conception.  Children, from the moment of conception, are a blessing and heritage from the Lord.

This statement of faith does not exhaust the extent of our faith. The Bible itself, as the inspired and infallible Word of God that speaks with final authority concerning truth, morality, and the proper conduct of mankind, is the sole and final source of all that we believe. For purposes of church doctrine, practice, policy, and discipline, the membership of Calvary Baptist Church is the church's final interpretive authority on the Bible's meaning and application.

We affirm the articles of faith as stated in the current ("Baptist Faith and Message" http://www.sbc.net/bfm2000/bfm2000.asp   )   of the Southern Baptist Convention.  We believe the Baptist Faith and Message is consistent with scripture and useful in providing further detail on our beliefs as a church. However, ultimately, we acknowledge the Bible as the highest authority in all matters of Christian faith and practice.
